The main body of the rifle was made with 2 pieces of MDF, which when sandwiched with some foamex on the sides would match the width of the grip. The groves were first marked out and then cut with a hand saw before being enlarger with a series of files. They were further shaped on my belt sander before finished by hand. Since I didn’t have any really thick foamex the barrel was built from layered pieces cut on my band and scroll saw. I started with a blueprint and used it to create templates and began cutting out the parts.
I also wanted to try some electrics in this project and had to plan how these would go into the build. After having a look at the various phasers that have appeared in the shows and movies I settled on the Type 3b phaser rifle. For my next build I chose to make a Star trek weapon. *** Please Note: This model is based on the phaser rifle seen only once in the Star Trek original TV series episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before” which aired on September 22, 1966.I’ve always liked Star Trek and grew up with the Next Generation, DS9 and Voyager. The rifle featured both gyro stabilization and auto tracking systems greatly increasing the effectiveness of the weapon. With an overall length of 37 ½ inches, it consisted of a light tri-deutanium frame housing a rotating triple pre-fire chamber system designed to provide variable plasma intensity to the nadion phase emitter utilizing a variable power control system. With regards to Starfleet Personal Hand Weapons, the model shown here represents the first Type 3 Phaser Rifle, developed (concurrently with the smaller and less powerful Types 1 and 2 personal hand phasers) during the early 2260’s and issued to Starfleet personnel on a limited basis in 2265. Under this division, the old laser based weapons technologies of the 2250’s would give way to the breakthrough phaser technologies of the 2260’s. As the result of serious deficiencies in Starfleet weapons systems revealed during the Federation Weapons Research and Development Hearings of 2250, it was by order of the Federation Council and Starfleet Command that on June 7, 2251, Starfleet Tactical was established to oversee all future weapons R&D and defensive strategies, with administrative offices located at Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco on Earth, under the command of the Chief of Starfleet Tactical.
